This is a simple example of using cylindrical mapping to wrap a Mercator
projection Earth map on a sphere to make a passable globe in Polyray 1.6.
I don't think these are really Mercator projections, but that's the way
it goes sometimes. Anyway, these are an alternative to mirrored spheres.
The maps were downloaded from AmigaArts, Lib 11, 24 bit art.
The imagemap in earth1.GIF is from Jim Roof, Video Graphics Associates
The imagemap in earth2.GIF is from John Foust, Syndesis
I cleaned up some noise in Jim's map and smoothed it out,
since different sections had different sharpness.
Then I did an unsharp mask on both to add some snap to 'em.
I converted them to 8 bit paletted TGA, since that's the
smallest color file format that Polyray'll accept.
I'm posting the datasets and maps for both earth1 and earth2
in a single archive called EARTHS.ZIP.
